✌ On the road and into the blue!
🌞 This is the road bringing me to Alona Beach in the Philippines where fell head over heels in love with diving and a videographer.
💙 I was so proud of going out into the world alone once more. After all, I was following my dreams. On the one hand, there was learning to dive and on the other, I did my first job as a freelancer for non-governmental organisations. Yoeri with his camera matched my energy and here we are 11 years later, on another island in another part of the world.
🌈 No matter, if it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience or turns into an island-hopping life of its own, we both believe in the benefits of experiencing various cultures, listening to other points of view, living in different environments, adapting to changing circumstances and growing with each obstacle.
🌏 As we like to encourage more people to step out into the world and experience what life is like in another part of the planet (I can also be much closer by than the Philippines or the Caribbean, of course), I put some ideas together in a German blog article: "Auf, auf, in die Welt hinaus: Ideen für Suchende" (link in bio: Blog Abgetaucht). There are many options for volunteering and internships around the world, this selection is based on my personal experiences.

🌳 Happy World Rainforest Day!
🪸 As we were out diving with @stenapastatia - NGO managing the national parks on St. Eustatius- today and afterwards walked the dogs at the animal shelter, we are celebrating the green lung of our planet a little late in the day.
💚 Rainforests are incredibly diverse and complex, home to more than half of our world’s plant and animal species - even though they cover just 6% of Earth’s surface. These hotspots of biodiversity help regulate our climate and provide us with everyday products as well as new inspiration from medicine to bio-technologies.
🍀 We would like to invite you today to consider some voluntary work or internship, to help protect the rainforest or the ocean if that is more your thing. Or maybe work with children or animals. While I am writing this I realise I have done that all and enjoyed the different aspects, countries, perspectives and insights I gained.

... Doch, wie bei mir, tauchen beim Wort Yoga bei den meisten Menschen sofort irgendwelche Bilder und Zuschreibungen voor dem inneren Auge auf. Von Euphorie über Desinteresse bis leidenschaftliche Abwehr ist alles dabei. Gerade in der westlichen Welt wird noch häufig allein der körperliche Aspekt gesehen, während die Auswirkungen auf den Geist etwas ungelenk hinterherhinken. So habe auch ich angefangen. Nach und nach mal hier reingeschnuppert, mal da etwas ausprobiert, um irgendwann kopfüber ins Meer der Möglichkeiten zu fallen.
Viel spannender und mit jeder Menge Spezialeffekten wird eine solche Entwicklung übrigens in dem Marvel-Film „Dr. Strange” erzählt. Wie Bücher einem beim wiederholten Lesen ganz neue Seiten offenbaren, wenn neue Erfahrungen den eigenen Blickwinkel verändert haben, so eröffnet mir dieser Film immer neue Dimensionen, je nachdem, wo ich gerade stehe. In meiner Vorstellung können wir unsere persönliche Superkraft, den Atem, kultivieren, und lernen unsere Energien zu lenken, vielleicht nicht, um die Welt vor der dunklen Dimension zu retten, aber in jedem Fall uns selbst."

🌸 Art by nature, this time above the water!
💚 When I spotted this flower for the first time, I couldn't believe it. Such wild colours in a mesmerising pattern - on a fence in Germany! I would have expected it in the tropics. Originally from Latin America, it turns out that passion flowers (Passiflora) grow also in a temperate climate. However, they do best in sunny locations with loose soil to drain excess water and they don't like cold winters. All in all, I flower just like us.
🙏 Back in the tropics, we got a fruit-bearing variation: Passiflora edulis. Even though we are curious to see the flowers on this one, we hope for many fruits to eat. After all, Statia is the best location for buying tropical fruits as described in one of our last blog articles in "Dive, travel, connect & protect (link in bio): "No fruits in paradise!? Water to green St. Eustatius". Now we pray for fruits!
👉 Apparently, the passion flower got its name from missionaries coming to Brazil to spread Christianity. According to them, the flowers’ five stigmas resembled the five wounds inflicted during Jesus’ crucifixion so named it after Jesus’s passion Passiflora. Translated into plain English it became passion flower and passion fruit. However, in Latin America, the fruit already had a name: maracuja. To make it even more confusing, Granadilla, another fruit, is also in the genus Passiflora. We shall keep an eye out for that one too!

🌏 It is World Sea Turtle Day 2022! Let's celebrate with a minute of relaxation - already number 40 of our series "Take a Minute to Relax".
💙 In this relaxing minute, we invite you to swim alongside one of the more famous and beloved ocean creatures, the Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). These marine reptiles, and yes they are reptiles, have been roaming the world’s oceans for an incredibly long time. It is believed that the “Cheloniidae” family, the name of these marine turtles, has been living on our planet since the last Mesozoic Era, more than 100 million years ago! Making them some kind of living fossils.
🪸 Hawksbills provide an important service to coral reefs as a whole by eating predominately sponges. Hereby they keep open space on the reef for other marine life forms to thrive, such as corals.
⛱ Habitat loss, using the ocean as a dumping ground for all sorts of human waste products as well as fuelling climate change are putting pressure on sea turtle populations. Therefore, hawksbills are protected under the CITES treaty. However, there is still illegal trade in turtle products.

🎼 "I, I follow, I follow you

☀️ Sing and swing into your weekend with sunbeams falling onto one of the coral species found in abundance on the healthy reef tops around @wakatobi
🪸 Sarcophyton sp. is also known as mushroom or toadstool leather coral and comes most of the time in shades of brown or cream. The coral colony grows out of a solitary stalk topped with a broad “cap” from which the polyps emerge. Over time this "cap" widens, becoming more wavy and convoluted and losing the mushroom-like appearance somewhat.
🚿 Every once in a while Sarcophyton retracts its polyps and stays closed up for a couple of days. This is coral cleansing time as it needs to get rid of debris and algal growths on its tissues. During this time the coral builds up a waxy mucus on its surface, which takes all of the alien stuff with it when shed. After that, the polyps will re-emerge and the coral will look as good as new.
👉 Sarcophyton sp. releases chemicals into the water as a way to fend off neighbouring corals. After all, they don't want others to encroach on their prime location!

🌏 Happy World Ocean Day!
🌊 We live on a blue planet. The ocean regulates temperatures worldwide and produces the oxygen of every second breath we take. It stores more CO22 than it can actually handle. But it also provides food and medicine. Many livelihoods and businesses depend on the ocean and we all love to spend time in and around the sea.
🐋 When thinking of the ocean, most likely a little creature like this tubeworm called feather duster (family Sabellidae) is not what comes to mind first. Nevertheless, they do play their part in the balance of the ecosystem. Like many other sedentary life forms, Sabellidae is a “filter feeder” that dines on planktonic prey and detritus, brought in by the currents. There are so many different creatures - specialists and generalists - and only together do they keep an ecosystem like a coral reef alive and healthy.

🌍 "Only One Earth" was the theme of World Environment Day when it was celebrated on June 5th 1974 for the first time. This is true until today: We only have this one planet and in order to protect it we must share our home planet with others.
🌱 Not only other humans, but the whole network of species plays a vital role to keep the planet healthy for all of us. However, the human demand for energy, food, water and land has increased more and more. As humans are constantly taking space away from #nature, more and more species become extinct or endangered.
😍 Let's share. Let's invite nature into our homes. Let's be happier with less stuff and feel more instead. Let's work together.
🦀 Caribbean hermit crabs (Coenobita clypeatus) set a great example in the way they acquire a new shell. When a shell is getting too small and a hermit comes across one which isn't just the right fit. It will wait there. More and more hermit crabs are joining. In the end, they are forming a line from small to big and everyone moves up one house. Recycling and teamwork!
We watched this spectacle onYouTube as a short clip for BBC Earth. Fingers crossed, we can capture more hermits right here in our garden.

Filmed in Anda, Bohol, the Philippines where Yoeri patiently waited for me to come along 11 years ago (full story in my latest German blog post "Wie ich wurde, was ich bin" as part of #boomboomblog2022 ). Okay, maybe he did not wait so patiently, but at least he made the most out of his time and produced lots of beautiful footage which we partially present on our website and YouTube. Here is what he wrote regarding this piece of art:
💙 After many episodes that focused on the smaller and more cryptic marine life, in this „Take a Minute to Relax“ we’d like to introduce you to the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). The name of this creature has confused people for many years, and unlike what it seemingly suggests, this creature is in no way related to whales.
🦈 The only reason this was added to its name, was to give people an idea about the immense size of this fish. Rhincodon typus can grow up to a size of around 18 metres when given the chance. Although most adults that are encountered by people are around 12 metres in length. Not only are these creatures very large, but they can live to be around 130 years!
🗺 Despite its enormous size, and the amount of research that’s been done on them, much of the whale sharks‘ life is still shrouded in mystery. This is probably due to the fact that whale sharks migrate and can easily travel great distances. One particular tagged specimen was recorded to travel nearly 15.000 kilometres, in a little over 3 years. On top of that Rhincodon typus can dive to a depth of around 1,500 metres. All of this makes it very hard for scientists to study this iconic creature.

😍 Today we are celebrating 11 years together. When I went to the Philippines for diving and researching, I ran into this Dutch guy at the back of a dive centre for rum-coke o-clock. That's where Yoeri's and my story begins. Thanks to all of you who did accompany us since then.
🤩 Over the last week I got the chance to reflect on my journey. "How did I become what I am" was the topic of a blog challenge by @sympatexter Yesterday I published my story on our German "Blog: Abgetaucht" (link in bio). Writing this piece was almost therapeutical, I could free myself from self-doubts and the labels of others.
🙏 Thank you, Judith, to create the space to dive into my own story. Blogging reminded me of all the wonderful places I have been, the obstacles I have overcome and the love and support I always got to follow my dreams. Occis forever!
🏵 Actually, there is another reason to celebrate today. Here is the last paragraph of my blog article:
"30. Mai 2022: Wir melden Devocean Pictures offiziell als Unternehmen auf Statia (Niederländische Karibik) an!
Seit Ende August 2021 sind wir wieder auf Sint Eustatius. An unserem 11-jährigen Jahrestag werden Yoeri und ich morgen den nächsten Schritt gehen und endlich offiziell zusammen eine Firma gründen. War es bisher ausreichend einzeln als Kleinunternehmer*in aufzutreten, wollen wir jetzt über uns hinauswachsen und neues Land betreten. Nächste Woche filmen wir das erste Material für WOW! The Nature Film. So viele weitere Ideen warten darauf, das Licht der Welt zu erblicken. Wir werden berichten."
